How We Cleaned Up TG Technical Services' BigCommerce Store

Posted by Freetail Commerce on Aug 12 2026

Most BigCommerce stores we look at aren't broken. They've just been live for a while, and years of small changes, added apps, and deferred updates have quietly piled up. That was the case for TG Technical Services, whose BigCommerce storefront had accumulated technical debt across performance, accessibility, and structured data.

We ran a Standard Technical Cleanup engagement over one week, and the before-and-after numbers tell the story better than we can.

The Results

We paid close attention to desktop performance here because TG Technical Services' traffic data showed a higher share of desktop visitors than most stores we see, a good reminder that the right fixes depend on how a store is actually used, not just general best practices.

What We Found and Fixed

Deprecated social sharing scripts. BigCommerce discontinued support for AddThis, a social sharing tool, several years ago. The leftover code was throwing console errors and broken links. We replaced it with BigCommerce's current default sharing solution.

Broken navigation links. Two manufacturer links in the site navigation were returning 404 errors. One was a simple control panel fix. The other required a config file update.

Incorrect heading structure. Blog post titles were using H2 tags instead of H1 tags, which affects both accessibility and SEO. We corrected the heading hierarchy site-wide.

Outdated product schema. Product pages were using older microdata markup with multiple errors instead of the modern JSON-LD format. We rebuilt the schema across the affected theme files, which cleared every critical issue flagged by Google's Rich Results Test.

Lazy-loading applied to the wrong images. The homepage's main banner image wasn't prioritized for loading, while category cards above the fold were set to lazy-load, the opposite of what should happen. We fixed the priority so visible content loads first.

Missing accessibility attributes. Buttons, links, and images across the site were missing attributes that assistive technology relies on. We addressed these globally, which brought the accessibility score from 75 to 98 and cleared all 25 flagged errors. These same attributes also matter increasingly for AI shopping tools and agentic browsers, which rely on clean, well-labeled markup to understand and navigate a page the same way a screen reader does.

Page elements shifting as they loaded. Images and product sliders didn't have their space reserved on the page, so things visibly shifted as the page finished loading. We fixed that so the layout holds steady from the start.

Outdated theme foundation. The current version of BigCommerce's Cornerstone theme includes performance improvements that hadn't made it into TG Technical Services' theme files. We integrated the compatible updates directly.

Why This Matters

None of these issues on their own would sink a store. Together, they add up: slower load times, a less accessible experience for some visitors, and missed opportunities in search results and AI-powered browsing tools that are becoming more common every year.

The good news is that this kind of technical debt is very fixable, and it doesn't require a redesign or a platform migration to address. It just requires someone to actually go looking for it.
